UN Human Rights Council Elections: Islamic States Increase Chokehold

May 21, 2008: At the General Assembly's UN Human Rights Council elections, held in New York, Islamic states increased their numbers and the number of democracies decreased. Foxes still minding the chicken coop.

Speaker: Anne Bayefsky, Editor, EYEontheUN.org
"Today's outcome of the human rights election votes are a very poor sign for the efficacy of the Human Rights Council. The Organization of the Islamic Conference increased its numbers on the Council and that means that the stranglehold of the Islamic Group on every outcome of the Council is gotten actually worse. And don't forget what the Council is about. 60% of the resolutions and decisions ever adopted criticizing governments have been about Israel. 4 special sessions on Israel; 7 regular sessions on human rights in the rest of the world, so that nightmare, that inability of the Human Rights Council to deal with human rights violations throughout the rest of the world is now going to increase. Furthermore, this outcome did not incrase the number of democratic states elected to the Council so you still have less than 50% of Human Rights Council members are fully free democratic societies. So the Human Rights Council remains, although it's the lead human rights agency of the United Nations, it remains an ineffective and the foxes minding the chicken coup where the human rights abusers are in fact in control."

Durban II: Keeping Jewish NGOs Out - Part II

UN Human Rights Council, Geneva
April 21, 2008 - April 23, 2008

The saga of how a Jewish NGO was deliberately precluded from participating in the first substantive preparatory meeting for Durban II -- and gave up on ever meeting the Committee's alleged criteria.

Speaker: Libyan president Najat al-Hajjaji:
"Taking into account that Iran is still not satisfied with the responses received from this NGO to two of questions raised in its recent letter, the Bureau recommends that the NGO concerned should be requested to provide as soon as possible with replies to those specific questions. The consideration by the PrepCom of the issue of NGO accreditation will thus be further postponed for 48 hours. That's to say until Wednesday mid-day."

Speaker: Iran:
"The Islamic Republic of Iran after examining the relevant information decided to object to the accreditation of Canadian Council for Israel and Jewish Advocacy."

Speaker: Syria
"On behalf of my country I say that we support the position based by not admitting this NGO to participate in the PrepCom or in the Review Conference itself."
